Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Nursing Jobs
Summary
Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) jobs involve caring for infants, children and adolescents with life-threatening or high-acuity conditions. PICU nursing jobs typically require collaboration with families, physicians and a multidisciplinary team to determine the best course of patient care and recovery. PICU nurses constantly monitor and assess patients, inform patients and their families on the status of procedures, and are trained to perform life-saving, invasive interventions to stabilize patients. Not only do you take care of the children, but also their parents and extended families.
Experience
RNs seeking PICU nursing jobs usually have a BSN. It is a very fast-paced unit, so it is better suited for nurses who have learned their basic competencies on a medical-surgical unit or come from an equally fast paced unit (such as the ER). A PICU nurse has to be able to focus in an environment where things can happen at any time. Many facilities require additional pediatric education training.
Salary
Nurses with tenured experience may receive higher levels of compensation. PICU salaries often vary by location, employer and level of experience, but it’s important to note that PICU nurses are among the best compensated of all types of intensive care nurses.
